Fired Teacher's Campaign Issues Raise More Questions
Now Brian's key campaign issues are raising even more questions.
As we first reported fired Westside High School teacher and soccer coach John Brian wants to be on the school board that fired him—fired him unanimously following an unusual day-long hearing last year.
He was accused of various forms of unprofessional behavior and specific inappropriate comments about special education students.
The election for two seats on the District 66 school board is May 12.
In an interview with News Channel Nebraska, Brian highlighted his three main campaign issues, which raise even more questions:
[See our full video report above]
NCN: Why do you want to be on a board that fired you?
Brian: I just want people to have a different voice, if they wish, on the school board.
NCN: This isn’t an attempt to get even?
Brian: Again, I think everyone deserves a second chance.
And Brian tells NCN he’s running on three main issues, all of them disputed.
Brian: We have hemorrhaged teachers out of Westside; we’ve lost so many teachers.
But not according to numbers from the State Board of Education.
Metro teacher turnover during the last five years looks like this:
Omaha and Ralston lose an average of 8 percent of their teachers each year; Bellevue, Elkhorn, Millard and Papillion 7 percent; Gretna: 6 percent
The lowest turnover rate is Westside with 5 percent.
Brian: We’re one of the few schools in the country that does modular scheduling and I hate to see that it seems to be slowly slipping away.
But according to Superintendent Mike Lucas, modular scheduling—different classes on different days—is safe, telling me there are “No Plans” to do away with it.
Then there’s Westside’s West Campus, its alternative high school.
Brian: The unfortunate thing that’s happened with our alternative school is being kind of pushed to the background and I don’t think that’s something Westside should do.
Lucas says the alternative school, for students, “who are not successful in traditional” surroundings is not being minimized that they are “actually doing just the opposite.”
Brian: I’m not about to tell Dr. Lucas how to do his job I have the utmost respect for him.
NCN: Do you wonder about (Brian’s) reasons for being on the board?
Yale: I do. I question his motivations. Given what I saw, given his demeanor, he was calling kids in this hearing up in his defense and airing his colleagues dirty laundry all to defend himself. I wonder if he has the best of the organization in mind.
Brian: Some people think it’s my way of getting back, it’s not.
