HASTINGS, Neb. – People appointed to volunteer city boards and/or committees in Hastings are now limited to how many boards they can serve on, and how long they can serve on them.

The Hastings City Council read and approved the final of three ordinance readings at Monday night's meeting.

Ordinance 4798 will limit anyone serving on a city board or committee to serve only two consecutive terms, and to serve on no more than two boards or committees at the same time.

Hastings city board and committee positions are volunteer positions.

Council members previously voiced their opinions for or against in previous meetings, but there was no discussion on the ordinance before Monday night's vote.

In the final vote, Steve Huntley, Michael Anderson, Larry Consbruck, and Marc Rowan voted 'yes', while Brad Consbruck, Maggie Esch, Brian Hoffman, and Matt Fong voted 'no.'

For the second time in as many readings, Mayor Jay Beckby broke the 4-4 tie with his vote of approval, officially solidifying the ordinance into city code.

The only exception to the ordinance, would be that people previously serving back-to-back terms on a board or committee could serve another term after taking a four year cycle off.
