Omaha Westview girls withstand late surge, top Kearney 51-47
KEARNEY, Neb. - The Omaha Westview girls basketball team survived a fourth-quarter push from Kearney to earn a top-10 road win 51-47 on Friday night.
With the victory, the #5 Wolverines improved to 20-3 and the #10 Bearcats dropped to 16-5. The game did not have an impact on district tournament seeding as Class A brackets were released Friday morning.
Westview gained control of the game early with defense. They limited Kearney to one made field goal in the first quarter and held an 11-3 lead. The Bearcats reversed the outcome in the second quarter and limited the Wolverines to just 9 points. Westview made a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a 20-19 lead to halftime.
The teams traded blows in the third quarter before Westview pulled away late in the period. The Wolverines again hit a last-second three-pointer and went to the fourth in control 41-33.
Westview remained in control until the final couple minutes. Kearney used its full-court press to force steals and went on an 8-0 run to make it a one-point game. The Bearcats had a shot to take the lead with less than 30 seconds left but missed. Cardy King hit two free throws in the final seconds to make it a two-possession lead and seal the win.
