Alex Beveridge's big night helps Gothenburg pull away for 73-45 win over Valentine
GOTHENBURG, Neb. -- Alex Beveridge scored 31 points and Gothenburg used a spectacular third quarter to defeat Valentine 73-45 on Friday night.
The win helps the Class C-1 #2 Swedes to a 16-1 record and drops Valentine to 5-14.
This is was the second time the teams faced off in the last two weeks. Gothenburg won 72-15 during the Southwest Conference Tournament, but Valentine played largely without star Paige Sprenger.
It looked like it could be another blowout after the Swedes built a 19-4 lead through one quarter. Then, Valentine figured things out and went on an 8-0 to start the second quarter and make it a competitive game.
Sprenger hit a three-pointer to open the second half and cut it to a seven-point game. That's when Beveridge took over. She hit five three-pointers and scored 19 points in the quarter to open up a commanding 23-point lead for the Swedes. Gothenburg coasted through the fourth quarter to get the win.
Sprenger finished with 33 points for the Badgers. Gothenburg heads to Minden on Saturday night for a top five showdown.
Gothenburg: 19, 11, 27, 16 = 73
Valentine: 4, 16, 14, 11 = 45
