Centennial Park Apartments in Kearney awarded $4M federal grant for energy upgrades
KEARNEY, Neb. — A Kearney apartment complex will soon undergo massive renovations thanks to a federal grant.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $4 million to the owners of Centennial Park Apartments on Tuesday. It is the first Green and Resilient Retrofit grant awarded in Nebraska. The money is meant to go toward energy efficiency and climate resiliency.
“I think that the investment across the country to have an increase in affordability or an increase in rehabilitative units is the longevity of what that $4 million represents,” HUD Nebraska field office director Kitty Amaya said.
Centennial Park has 50 units, which means the grant is providing about $80,000 per unit.
The owners are still planning how to use the money, but it could mean new roofs, new windows, new siding, updates to the interior and could involve switching to a new sustainable energy source like solar.
Officials say the energy efficiency upgrades should mean a reduction in utility bills for tenants.
Centennial Park Apartments is on the southwest corner of 11th St. and 4th Ave.
