As you drive through Central Nebraska on Interstate 80, you may notice a certain teal blue billboard has a new face on it.

The Hastings Museum has changed the animal on their four interstate billboards from a Xiphactinus fish to a mountain lion.

Hastings Museum Director Teresa-Kruetzer-Hodson said the change was warranted to provide a better picture of what the museum is all about.

"I think a lot of people think the mountain lion is a better representation of what we have here in the museum," said Kruetzer-Hodson. "Even though the Xiphactinus is part of our collection, it's just not as recognizable."

According to some locals, the fish on the billboard was confusing and didn’t provide much appeal to visit the museum.

The preferred mascot by popular demand was to change the character in the billboard to Kool-Aid Man. Due to commercialization rights of Kool-Aid man, the request was denied by the Nebraska Tourism Commission.

The Hastings Museum is open year-round Tuesday through Sunday.
