Kearney Catholic stuns Lincoln Lutheran to win Centennial Conference Tournament title
COLUMBUS - It had been 74 games since the Lincoln Lutheran Warriors last suffered defeat - that was until the Kearney Catholic Stars went toe to toe with the #1 team in the state and won 2-1 in the Centennial Conference Tournament Championship.
Lincoln Lutheran and Kearney Catholic had not lost in the tournament at this point and it was a tightly contested fight from the start.
The Warriors held the advantage in the first set, finding success with Ava Jurevicius and Lily Wohlgemuth. The Stars fought back, but it ultimately wasn't enough, as Lincoln Lutheran took the first set 25-19.
In set two, Lincoln Lutheran continued its momentum, leading 14-7 at one point and looking for a sweep in the title game.
After a Stars timeout, Kearney Catholic began the slow climb and eventually tied the set at 20 a piece.
From that point, it was blow for blow between the Stars and the Warriors. Both teams had multiple set point opportunities, but it was the Stars who came out on top in a marathon second set, 34-32.
Kearney Catholic's Margaret Haarberg, Payton Dzingle and Aibrey Mandernach helped the Stars in the comeback.
The Stars came out hot in the third set, leading 4-1, but the Warriors came right back and took a 5-4 lead. Things were knotted up at 11, before the Stars took a few massive points and swung the momentum.
Kearney Catholic held on to win the Centennial Conference Tournament Championship in exciting fashion, 25-17 and snapped a 74-game win streak for Lincoln Lutheran, a streak that had lasted 718 days.
The Stars were led by Margaret Haarberg with 14 kills, Aibrey Mandernach with 7 and Payton Dzingle with 6.
In the tough defeat for the Warriors, Lily Wohlgemuth dominated with 16 kills.
