Ground attack leads Scotus to 41-27 win over West Point-Beemer
COLUMBUS - On a beautiful September Thursday night, the rushing attack was a thing of near perfection for the Scotus Shamrocks, as they outlasted a tough battle from the West Point-Beemer Cadets 41-27.
The Shamrocks began the game with the football and kept the ball in the hands of a few key rushers - Fullback Evan Kiene took the bulk of the carries with 16 on the night, while Luke Wemhoff ran it 11 times.
Scotus scored on its opening drive after Wemhoff punched it in from four yards away. Frank Feringer missed the PAT, giving the Shamrocks a 6-0 lead.
West Point-Beemer quickly drove down and answered back with a six yard touchdown run from Juan Lemus to take a 7-6 lead.
With time remaining in the first quarter, Shamrock quarterback Cohen Pelan uncorked a ball downfield to Jackson Heng with made a spectacular catch and scored from 60-yards out.
Scotus would punch it in again near the end of second quarter, as Evan Kiene found the endzone for the first time from seven yards out to give the Shamrocks a 20-7 lead.
Not even thirty seconds later, West-Point Beemer capitalized on broken coverage as Connor Troyer tossed a pass behind the defense to a wide open Brayden Doggett who put the exclamation on a 70-yard touchdown pass.
After halftime, Jackson Heng intercepted the Cadets on the opening drive and Wemhoff found the endzone for the second time to lead 27-14.
Once again, the Cadets didn't quit, as Treven Weddle dashed 45 yards downfield to set up a touchdown run from Juan Lemus from 14-yards out for his second score of the evening.
Colten Haber missed the PAT wide left, making the score 27-20.
Scotus managed to burn clock and continue to pound the football as Luke Wemhoff used his speed to outrun the Cadet defense on a 44-yard touchdown run.
Another score late in the game by Thomas Settje would give the Shamrocks a 41-20 lead.
West Point-Beemer did find pay dirt one more time on a quarterback keeper by Connor Troyer. The Cadets weren't able to corral the onside kick and the Shamrocks knelt out the clock to win its third game of the season and move to 3-1.
The win is also the third straight against West Point-Beemer.
The Cadets fall to 2-2 on the season and look to upset #1 Boone Central next week, while the 3-1 Shamrocks take on Arlington.
