Lopers hold off Northeastern St. 31-17 for first win of Ryan Held era
KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Nebraska Kearney Lopers got three touchdowns from T.J. Davis and earned a 31-17 win over Northeastern St. on Saturday night.
The victory comes in the UNK (1-1) home opener and marks the first win for new head coach Ryan Held. In the game, Davis ran for 116 yards and two scores and passed for 195 yards and a touchdown. He moved ahead of Rustin Dring to second in school history for career rushing yards with more than 3,800 and surpassed 5,000 career passing yards during the win.
The Lopers opened the game in dominant fashion by forcing a three and out and scoring on a two-play touchdown drive. But the RiverHawks (0-2) didn't give up and stayed competitive the whole game. UNK led 17-7 at halftime and kept at least a 7-point cushion the entire second half.
The Lopers regained a two-score lead in the fourth quarter on a 14-play, 60-yard drive that took eight minutes and 37 seconds off the clock. Tre O'Guinn intercepted a pass on the ensuing Northeastern St. possession to seal the win.
UNK hosts Missouri Southern next Saturday. Kickoff is at noon and it will be televised on News Channel Nebraska.
