Columbus outlast Papillion La Vista, winning 3-3(4-1) in penalty shootout
The Columbus girls soccer team have taken down Papillion-La Vista after winning in penalty kicks 3-3 (4-1).
After scoring two goals with the wind at their back in the first half, the Discoverers took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The first goal was headed in in the 20th minute by Joey Long, then Abby Haynes doubled the lead in the 35th minute after dribbling around the goalkeeper and firing home around two defenders.
The Monarchs came out in the second half firing. A few minutes after a failed penalty attempt, Maggie Turner cashed in at the 57th minute from outside the box after finding her way through the Columbus back line. The equalizer came just four minutes later, when Alex Wright scooped up a loose pass and caught Columbus goalie Jordyn Trotta off her line.
In the extra time period, Papillion-La Vista took the lead in the 85th minute after a clean finish from Laina Souerdyke, but the Discoverers matched the effort just four minutes later, after a long flip throw in from Carly Gaedeke forced an own goal.
In penalties, Trotta saved the first two monarch attempts, allowing fourth shooter Ayla Janssen to secure the win with her converted penalty.
With the win Columbus improve to 4-1 on the season, and have won four straight games.
Papillion-La Vista drops to 2-2.
