Wynot survives LCC second half comeback attempt, wins instant classic to cap off regular season
Wynot took down Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 53-49 in a thriller to finish their regular season with back-to-back wins.
After a close first half, the Blue Devils took advantage of several mistakes to stretch out to a 16-point lead midway through the third quarter.
A strong Bears run brought LCC back within two points entering the fourth quarter. Despite never regaining the lead, the Bears pulled the game back within one possession several times throughout the final eight minutes of play.
Ultimately, two important free throws from Junior Zack Foxhoven, who remained in the game despite an injured ankle, pulled the Blue Devils away in the final minute.
The Blue Devils were led by a breakout effort from Junior guard Dylan Heine. Heine tallied 23 points and 10 rebounds and was a consistent problem all night from deep. He sunk five three-point shots, most several steps behind the three-point arc.
Wynot also benefitted from major contributions from Foxhoven with 11 points, and Junior Chase Schroeder with 8 points.
Despite the close loss, LCC were led by an impressive low post show from Senior leader Jake Rath, who finished with 25 points, and 19 rebounds. Sophomore Gibson Roberts also helped power the second half comeback attempt, finishing with 14 points.
With the win, Wynot cap off their regular season at 19-4, and will prove a tough test for any Class D2 team in the post season. The Blue Devils boys last won the D2 state title back in 2013.
LCC drop to 16-8, dropping the final game of their regular season. With an impressive resume, the Bears will go into postseason in Class C2 looking for a state title of their own.
