TRANSCRIPT:

For weeks the GOP has been blasting Democrat Congressional hopeful Tony Vargas, a sitting State Senator, of trying to raise his own pay.

(GOP Ad): Tax man Tony Vargas tried to use taxpayer money to double his own salary.

And that’s true. But there’s more.

Nebraska State Senators, like Vargas, make $12,000 a year, the same $12,000 they’ve made since 1988, that’s 34 years without a pay raise.

In the meantime, Members of Congress make $174,000 a year. And Bacon’s been in Congress six years, pulling down just under $1.1 million dollars.

Now in their final debate, Vargas made it clear he’s fed up with the “Tax Man Tony” talk.

State Sen. Tony Vargas (D): I made $12,000 a year as a state senator you've made more than $1,000,000 as a member of Congress for your salary.

Bacon’s response:

Rep. Don Bacon (R): He has voted present not voting or skipped votes almost 20% of the time.

And they weren’t done.

Vargas:  I fought on behalf of working families I've actually balanced budgets because I am a working parent making $12,000 a year versus making more than $1,000,000 on the taxpayers’ dime.

Bacon: He has been AWOL almost one day out of five voting so he's not out there voting for fighting for you he's trying to dodge boats that are unpopular, or he doesn't want to take a stand one way or the other way.

But the two did have one thing in common.

Bacon never responded to Vargas’s big salary blast, and Vargas ignored Bacon’s attack on Vargas’s voting record.
