LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 33-year-old man was arrested after assaulting a police officer in Lincoln Monday afternoon.

The Lincoln Police Department said a uniformed officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with expired registration.

The traffic stop happened in the 900 block of south 14th St. around 4:15 p.m.

LPD said that when the officer did a check of the vehicle's license plate information showed the suspected driver, 33-year-old Raymond L. Palmer had a suspended drivers license.

Authorities said Palmer stopped and exited the vehicle.

Police said that he attempted to back away from the officer after he was told his drivers license was suspended.

LPD said the officer tried to take Palmer into custody, but a struggle started that continued to the ground.

During the struggle, officials said the officer was hit in the face with a back of the head headbutt, and Palmer was able to get back to his feet.

Following the headbutt, LPD said the officer tried to deploy a TASER device but it was unsuccessful, and Palmer fled on foot.

The officer caught up to Palmer on south 18th/D-E and with help from additional officers, Palmer was taken into custody, according to the LPD.

Palmer was lodged in jail for assault of an officer. He was cited for obstructing a police officer, driving under suspension and no valid registration.

It was reported the officer did not require medical treatment.
