With the weather starting to turn Omaha’s homeless, estimated at at least 1,600, are getting some financial help from the City Council.

The council this week giving the green light to just over $343,000 in federal funds for emergency shelter and what is known as “rapid re-housing.”

The grant money is being split four ways and goes to homeless operations throughout the city.

One city councilman urged Omahans to tap into their own pockets as well this holiday season.

Nearly half of that $340,000 goes to the Sienna Francis House located near TD Ameritrade Ballpark—home of the College World Series.
