SIDNEY - Heavy rain across eastern Cheyenne County and southern Morrill County in the panhandle of Nebraska has led to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne to issue a flash flood warning until 8:45 p.m.
At 5:43 p.m., doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing between one to two inches of rain in two hours. One to two inches of rain had already fallen in Cheyenne County with additional amounts of one to one-and-a-half inches possible.
Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas can be expected. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Sidney, Lodgepole, Dalton, Gurley, Colton, Sunol and the Sidney
Airport.
This includes Interstate 80 in Nebraska between mile markers 56 and 75.
The weather service advises to turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.
In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain, the weather service says. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.
