SIDNEY - The Sidney boys cross country team placed five runners in the top 15, including three in the top five, to claim the top spot at their home invite at Hillside Golf Course in Sidney on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Daniel Bashtovoi paced the Red Raiders on the 5K course with a second-place finish in a time of 16:52. Seniors Cameron Brauer (17:25) and Mitchell Deer (17:35) finished in third and fourth place. Another senior, Treyson Johnstone, ran a 20:01 to finish ninth and freshman Noah Canas was 13th at 18:37.

Sidney Head Coach Donna Weideburg says running on their home course makes the kids want to work harder.

"I’ve never seen a finish quite as epic as Treyson Johnstone’s," Weideburg said. "I may still be smiling when I think about that in years to come. He saw a North Platte runner (Gabe Jenny) in front of him about 200 meters from the finish line and it took him almost all 200 to get him, but he got him."

The Bulldogs finished second in the team standings. Senior Evan Caudy won the individual title with a time of 16:27.

With their full varsity team running, the Red Raiders won seven of the eight regular season meets they competed in.

North Platte took three of the top four individual spots in the girls race to run away with the team title. Sidney finished second.

Juniors Zarah Blaesi (19:48) and Marissa Holm (19:57) took the top two spots for the Bulldogs. Senior Evelyn Blaesi was fourth at 21:18.

Lady Raiders sophomore Talissa Tanquary finished third with a time of 20:56. Senior Lydia Peters was fifth in 21:26.

"We knew going in that North Platte would be very hard to beat," Weideburg said. "They have some phenomenal runners. Our girls ran well. They had a great day and continue to improve every week."

Sophomore Jenju Peters placed eighth for Sidney at 22:00. North Platte freshman Jada Hothan was 10th at 22:37.

Leyton junior Axi Benish finished seventh with a time of 21:51.

Runners across Nebraska will compete at district meets on Thursday.
