SIDNEY - Sidney's annual Oktoberfest returned in a big way Saturday.
The 47th annual event, which was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, featured a 5K and 10K run, a parade and a car show on Saturday.
The Sidney Regional Medical Center Oktoberfest Run had 122 participants. The female 5K winner was Melody Sanchez in a time of 25:04. The 5K male winner was Trevon Newmann with a time of 21:26. Valerie Richards won the female 10K race in a time of 51:54, while Peter Tel won the male race at 41:04. Carol Moore claimed the "Best Costume" honors. This year's theme was "Stomp Cancer, Run as One."
SRMC won the "Business" category at the Oktoberfest Parade along Illinois St. in downtown Sidney. Their "Keep Your Health on Track" float featured a large make-shift steam engine with a passenger car on two trailers, complete with white and pink steam coming from the locomotive.
Platte Valley Bank and the Sidney Foundry rounded out the "Business" category. Toys-for-Tots won the "Adult Organization" category, followed by the American Legion and Panhandle Shrine Club. In the "Youth Organization" category, Sidney High Danz team claimed the top spot, followed by Just for Kix in second and Boy Scouts in third. Aaron Brauer won the "Novelty" category with his Coca-Cola theme. Eddy Olsen's 1960 Plymouth was second and the Sidney Rad Riders were third.
Attendees of the parade were lined from NAPA Auto Parts to Dollar General and enjoyed 47 entries in the hour and a half long event.
120 cars were registered in the 2021 Cruise 'N Class Car Show in Legion Park. The Show-n-Shine show was held from noon until 4 p.m under sunny skies and temperatures near 80.
Robert Kerr's 1946 Ford Delivery was crowned the winner of the Rodder's Choice award. This is a prestigious award that is picked by all participants in the show.
Mike and Pam Amen won the People's Choice award with their 1961 Chevrolet Corvette. The Club Choice award winner was Robert Brownell's 1966 Chevy Corvair.
Saturday's events finished at the big tent at the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds with the Denver and District Pipe Band and Irish Punk Rock Band, "The Killigans," from Lincoln, Neb. Officials said they ran out of 2021 mugs, and three of the four beers being served, by early Saturday evening. One bratwurst stand said they would sell out of brats by the end of the night Saturday.
The Oktoberfest celebration wrapped-up Sunday with the Weiner Dog Races.
