COLUMBUS, Neb. -- It's Hispanic Heritage Month, and officials in eastern Nebraska are celebrating in a few ways.

The Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce; Centro Comunitario de Nebraska; and Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held a breakfast and networking event Thursday morning.

NPPD's Yesenia Peck was one of the speakers. She noted how much the Hispanic population has grown in the U.S., and that she feels the month is a celebration of myriad vibrant cultures. She also pointed out there are still stereotypes to overcome.

The Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce is also preparing a Latino Youth Summit to focus on career building for Hispanics and Latinos in Nebraska, at Central Community College, on October 12th.
