MADISON -- On Wednesday, the town of Madison celebrated a new double basketball court with a ribbon cutting.
"This was a project three years in the making," explained Youth Recreation Coordinator Janelle Torres. "A friend of mine and park board member saw this exact court in a magazine about three years ago and we laughed and thought, 'Oh, we'll have this one day,'" Torres said.
Eager, they applied for a matching grant through the Lower Elkhorn NRD and raised $20,000.
"It was just a lot of work. It's like one giant puzzle," Torres said.
Also, Madison's basketball court now has new benches; lights; and security cameras -- covered by $4,500 worth of community donations.
It means a lot to people like Daniel Fuhs.
"Before we had courts here but it was very difficult [...] not safe with loose edges and cement," Fuhs, Madison High School basketball coach, said.
The new court will also allow the community a new shot at growth.
"I think we have a lot of families coming into Madison and it's good to have things their kids can do," Fuhs said. "It's right by the playground and baseball fields too."
Not only is the city growing -- but the sport, he said. "When I came to Madison it was a big wrestling community, but it's fun to see kids getting into basketball now," Fuhs said.
