Norfolk area's first Pride Festival is a hit
NORFOLK, Neb. -- Around 675 people gathered in Norfolk Saturday at the Norfolk Arts Center to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. The mayor, local businesses, and restaurants all showed support for the town’s first ever Pride Festival.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” said panelist Eli Rigatuso. Rigatuso a transgender activist from Omaha. ”But I’ll tell you what, when I came down the street and saw all these flags flying […] it’s epic.”
Events began with a proclamation from Mayor Josh Moenning. Then activities started with an outdoor Zumba class, moon bounces and vendors and eventually concluded with a drag show in the evening, with over 100 people cramming into Mint Bar. The day also included a panel that answered questions about the LGBTQIA+ community.
Some asked about how to navigate coming out to conservative families - to which panelists encouraged kids to seek safety first, but also trust in the love of others - and give them time and patience to understand. Others asked about coming out stories, to which panelists noted it is a difficult and ongoing challenge. Rigatuso noted how every time he goes to a new community or meets someone new, he has to "come out" to them.
Some of the questions came from youth, who Vice President Mo Bailey said are in need of safe mentors. Bailey encouraged people to reach out to Norfolk Area Pride for not only resources but emotional support. To learn more visit their website: www.norfolkareapride.org.
