Nebraska City, Nelson aim for bounce back season under first-year head coach
NEBRASKA CITY — After going 2-6 in a strange season a year ago, Nebraska City is looking to bounce back under new head coach Kaleb Walker.
Formerly the Pioneer defensive coordinator, Walker is pumped up for his new role.
“I’ve been lucky enough to be in Nebraska City for awhile, been around the program, around the kids,” Walker said. “Was an assistant coach for a number of years and, really, the transition has been great.”
Senior MJ Nelson will be under center again this season, but the offense will look a bit different under coach Walker, shifting from fast-paced to more pro-style. While the change is a significant one, Nelson has a good approach, and coach Walker is confident in his abilities.
“I’m more of a fast-paced guy, I like to get going,” Nelson said. “I’m just going to have to slow down, take a deep breath, settle down.”
“They [opposing defenses] have to figure out an answer for M.J.,” Walker said. “And I think that’s one of the biggest compliments you can get as a football player. He does a phenomenal job running the offense, he’s obviously a super smart kid, and through our summer work already, he’s picking up on stuff.”
After a near 1,700 yard season to go along with 22 TD’s, Nelson has a goal in mind for 2021.
“Last year, I was really close to shattering the school record for passing yards, I think I was maybe a hundred-something yards away and then we didn’t get to play our last game,” Nelson said. “So, I’m really looking forward to getting back out there and trying to break that record again.”
Nebraska City kicks off the season off on August 27th as they visit the Schuyler Warriors.
