TOKYO — Set your alarm for early Friday morning if you want to catch Nebraskan Maggie Malone competing in the Olympic women’s javelin final.
The event is scheduled to start at 6:50 a.m. central time, which is 8:50 p.m. in Tokyo. Malone, a Geneva native and Fillmore Central graduate, is slated to throw eighth in the list of 12 finalists.
Malone won her preliminary group and registered the second-best distance overall with a throw of 63.07 meters. Maria Andrejczyk of Poland threw 65.24 in the other qualifying group.
Malone is ranked 12th in the world but owns the third-best throw of the year, a more than 67-meter toss at the US Olympic Trials in July.
Malone is trying to become the first American medalist in the event since Kate Schmidt won bronze in the 1976 and 1972 Olympics. Babe Didrikson is the only American to win gold in women’s javelin, winning the first edition of the event in the 1932 Los Angeles games.
