Schuetzenfest returns with a bang to Bow Valley
BOW VALLEY, Neb. -- Schuetzenfest returned to Bow Valley this year. For the first time ever, the German festival in Bow Valley was a two-day event.
The once-every-five years fest included games and drinking, but the most important part was the rifle shooting contest. Sixty-four competitors took turns aiming at a wooden duck across the baseball field for a few hours, but they say the point wasn't a competition as much as it was being with friends.
"I come for the people, all the people you meet," Matt Potts said of the hundreds of friends and family gathered Sunday.
Potts won after finally knocking the target off a pole. Kids then raced to pick up the biggest chunks of the target -- the biggest piece winning $20.
Everyone then gathered for a closing ceremony where Potts was named the King and awarded a rifle. A raffle and other festivities followed.
