Waverly rallies to take two from Beatrice and win Class B Jr. Legion title
WAVERLY, NE - It didn't look like the Waverly Empire Netting and Fence juniors had much hope.
The team faced elimination trailed 10-5 entering the bottom of the seventh. But Waverly rallied to push across six runs to beat Beatrice NEAPCO 11-10 and force a winner-take-all game for the Class B championship.
Waverly kept the momentum going in game two to win 11-3 and claim the state championship.
Head Coach Taylor Wyatt says his team's five-run inning earlier in game one gave him confidence they could complete the comeback in the seventh.
"We went out there, we talked and we said, 'if we do everything right and carry ourselves the right way, the door is going to open. I don't know what's going to happen, but the door is going to open. And it did and these guys took advantage of it.'"
Wyatt says winning the Jr's title is a big accomplishment for the players and the program.
"Winning at the biggest level of your age, it means a whole heck of a lot," Wyatt said. "I don't care if you're 10, I don't care if you're 35, it's really cool."
