OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A trio of rookies is headed to the Tokyo Olympics to compete for the U.S. in the pool.

Michael Andrew made his first team at age 22, winning the 100-meter breaststroke at trials.

Torri Huske, an 18-year-old, won the 100 butterfly. Claire Curzan, a 16-year-old, finished second to grab the expected other spot.

Andrew has been in the spotlight since turning pro at 14 and being trained by his father using an unorthodox program.

Huske and Curzan began turning heads with their speed a few years ago.

Need for speed: Ledecky wins 400 but slower than expected

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Katie Ledecky touched the wall far ahead of everyone else at the U.S. swimming trials. But she was taken aback by the time.

It wasn’t as fast as anyone expected, raising the stakes for an expected Olympic showdown with Australia's Ariarne Titmus.

Ledecky locked up her spot in Tokyo with a dominating victory in the 400-meter freestyle in Omaha, Nebraska. But the winning time of 4 minutes, 1.27 seconds was far off her world record of 3:56.46.

And it wasn't close to Titmus, known as “The Terminator.” She won the Australian trials with the second-fastest time in history.

Emotions stir Michael Phelps in his return to US trials

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Michael Phelps is back at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials just to watch for the first time since 1996.

The 23-time gold medalist says seeing the athletes post fast times stirs something in him. Phelps says that body-wise, he's ready to get in the pool and do a time trial. But no, he's not planning on a comeback.

He's in Omaha watching with his wife and 5-year-old son. Phelps says he's doesn't miss dealing with nerves and the pressure to perform, as well as going through warmups and warm downs, getting tested and massaged.

Lochte fails to advance in 200 free prelims at US trials

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Olympic champion Ryan Lochte has failed to advance from the preliminaries of the 200-meter freestyle in his first event of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

The 36-year-old Lochte is attempting to make his fifth Olympic team.

He posted a time of 1 minute, 49.23 seconds. That was only good enough for 25th place overall. The top 16 advanced to the evening semifinals and are led by Kieran Smith and Caeleb Dressel.

Smith won the 400 free on Sunday to earn his first trip to the Olympics.

Lochte was also entered Monday in the 100 backstroke, but he scratched that event.
