FAIRBURY, NE — It’s on to State for southeast Nebraska’s top track athletes.

Fairbury hosted the Class B-3 district meet on Thursday. Waverly took home top team honors in both boys and girls. The hosting Jeffs were fourth in girls and ninth in boys. Girls coach Matt Edson says it’s an impressive showing after last year’s canceled season.

“Coming in it was all about effort," Edson said. "The girls trained hard all year and it paid off in districts, we got our best times at districts. I’m excited for next week, we have a lot of chances to bring home some state medals.”

Overall, Fairbury qualified seven athletes in 10 events for the State meet. Mikwena Lierman was the school’s top competitor, winning the 400 meter dash, winning triple jump, finishing second in the 800 and qualifying for State in high jump. If you think seeing her at districts was impressive, Edson says you should see her at practice.

“Every day, it’s 100 percent effort, 100 percent hard work," Edson said. "She’s a great kid and I’m looking forward to coaching her one last time. Qualifying for four events is exceptional.”

Classes B and C compete at State on Friday and Saturday next week. You can watch all of Saturday’s running events live on News Channel Nebraska TV.
