Friday afternoon marked a special day for Nebraska Athletics, as groundbreaking for the Go B1G Project took place on the East Plaza of Memorial Stadium.

Friday's ceremony kicks off the construction of Phase One of the project, which will include football offices, locker rooms and meeting spaces, as well as new facilities for strength and conditioning, athletic medicine and equipment with the estimated completion set for 2023.

"My message is first and foremost to the donors, because this doesn't happen with you." said University of Nebraska system president Ted Carter as over 80 million dollars has been raised to this point. "When we talk about the significance of this day, how this vision has turned into a plan, and now has turned into money that has flowed to where we are going to put a ceremonial shovel in the dirt to start this. This really is a historic day."

Carter was one of the dignitaries who spoke at the ceremony, joining UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green, Athletic Director Bill Moos, Women's Basketball Coach Amy Williams and Football Coach Scott Frost

The project, which was first announced in October of 2019, was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, giving the planners an opportunity to imagine and create a first-class facility which will benefit every one of the Husker programs.

"The extra year has enabled the design team to really fine tune this project that, believe me, will be the finest in the country," said Moos. "It has details to it that will ensure that our student athletes are trained, fueled and educated better than anywhere in the country, and that's how we like to do it in Nebraska."

Phase 2 will include additional enhancements for all of Nebraska's student-athletes, including a new academic center, training table and student-athlete lobby.

"I feel the same pride as the University's commitment to innovation continues in phase two of this project, which will include the new academic center, a new training table, and a new lobby for all student athletes will serve as a central hub," said Williams. "That is so valuable to create a sense of community and camaraderie among all of our student athletes, and I'm so grateful to our administration for understanding that that needs to remain a priority in our athletic department."

"What we have right now is nice, but I think when this is done, what we're gonna have is the best." said Frost. "Amy (Williams) mentioned it, but being a student-athlete here and seeing Nebraska always be a leader in nutrition, in academics, in health, in services for our student athletes and in sport science, it made us proud to be Huskers. At the end of the day, one of the reasons I really wanted to do it is because this isn't just going to benefit the football team. This is going to benefit all student athletes and to think that Amy's girls and our guys and all the other student athletes at this university will spend most of their time right here and be steps away from our beautiful business building and the rest of our campus is going to be a huge advantage for us and a huge boost for us.
