LINCOLN, Neb. -- A vaccine breakthrough is when someone is fully vaccinated but still gets COVID-19. State officials say it happens, but new data from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says it's very rare.

New statewide data shows that after a person has been fully vaccinated, which occurs 14 days after a patient receives their final shot, there is an approximately 1-in-2,500 chance of still getting COVID-19.

The latest DHHS reporting indicates that out of over 560,000 Nebraskans who are vaccinated, there have been 215 breakthroughs reported. That means the COVID-19 vaccines have been 99.6% effective in Nebraska thus far.
