NU notes: Huskers Ready for NCAA Championships

The No. 4 Nebraska men's gymnastics team is set to compete at the NCAA Championships this Friday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m. CT.

The No. 4 Nebraska men's gymnastics team is set to compete at the NCAA Championships this Friday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m. CT. The Championships will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Maturi Pavillion. 

Last Time Out
NU is coming off of a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, their best finish since joining the conference in 2012. 

The Huskers had three medalists, Taylor ChristopulosCharlie Giles and Sam PhillipsTaylor Christopulos claimed the silver medal after earning a 14.55 on vault. Charlie Giles earned the bronze medal on vault with a score of 14.50. Sam Phillips matched his career-high score of 13.80 on high bar to earn the bronze medal. Zach Peters earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. 

Michigan claimed the team title after scoring a 411.000, the only team to reach the 400-mark at the Championships. Michigan gymnast Cameron Bock shared the all-around title with Minnesota's Shane Wiskus, who was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Championship. 

Scouting the Competition
The first round of the NCAA Championships will consist of two sessions, each with six teams. Competing in the first session with Nebraska is No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 8 Illinois, No. 9 Navy and No. 12 William and Mary. 

No. 1 Oklahoma is coming off its ninth straight conference title after scoring 412.750. The Sooners won two events as a team and had two gymnasts win event titles. Morgan Seyler won the floor title with a score of 14.85 while Gage Dyer won the vault title with a 14.80. 

This marks the first time this season that NU will go against a non-conference competitor.

Huskers Host No. 41 Hawkeyes on Senior Day

The No. 42 Nebraska women's tennis team (11-4 Big Ten) is at home for the weekend as they host No. 41 Iowa. The Huskers welcome the Hawkeyes on Sunday following two dominant wins on the road over Maryland and Rutgers. 

Huskers Continue Doubles Dominance
The Huskers double point against Rutgers marks the team's 12th doubles point this season, including a 5 match streak between February 14th and March 5th. Duo Isabel Adrover Gallego and Claire Reifeis improved to 11-4 on the season.
 
Makoric Rises 
Freshman Maja Makoric currently sits 12-5 this season after going 2-0 last weekend against Maryland and Rutgers. The Freshman from Slovenia is also 5-1 at the No. 1 spot in doubles, playing with senior Kristina Novak

Scouting Iowa
Freshman Alexa Noel was named Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week this week for the third time this season. Noel leads the Hawkeyes in singles wins with a 21-0 record on the year. She is currently ranked No. 13 in singles, the highest ranking by a singles player in Iowa program history.

Elise Van Heuvelen also entered the singles rankings for Iowa and currently sits at No. 86. Van Heuvelen, a senior, is on a six-match win streak playing out of the No. 2 spot in every match. 
 
Iowa is led by fifth-year Head Coach Sasha Schmid.
 
Senior Day Celebration
The Huskers will honor seniors Hayley HaakenstadClaire Reifeis, and Emma Worley prior to Sunday's matchup against Iowa. Sunday's match is open to the general public with masks required for all in attendance.

Following a week off, Nebraska will travel to Madison, Wisc., for the Big Ten Tournament, April 29-May 2.

Huskers Host Git-R-Done Invitational

After another strong tournament performance over the weekend, the Nebraska men's golf team gears up to host the Git-R-Done Husker Invitational Saturday and Sunday at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln.

The Huskers will welcome a nine-team field to the 7,040-yard, par-71 layout at Firethorn, including Big Ten Conference counterparts Michigan State and Minnesota, along with Kansas State, Louisiana Monroe, Kansas City, Eastern Michigan, Oral Roberts and Wyoming.

The two-day, 54-hole event begins with two rounds on Saturday, April 17, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. (CT). The tournament wraps up Sunday, April 18, with a final-round shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Nebraska's five-player lineup in count-four scoring will be led by freshman Jack Lundin, who tied for 12th with a career-best 218 at the Aggie Invitational (April 9-11). Lundin owns a team-best 74.56 stroke average. He also tied for fourth at the Hoosier Invitational (April 3-4).

Tom Westenberger added his second straight top-10 finish at the Aggie Invitational, tying for seventh with a career-best 217. He also tied for seventh at the Hoosier Invitational and owns a 75.22 stroke average through nine competitive rounds this season.

With Westenberger and Lundin leading the way at Texas A&M, Nebraska finished seventh with a season-best 893 in a 17-team field that featured 11 top-70 teams in the national rankings.

Huskers Face Big Ten Field in Indiana

The Nebraska women's golf team returns to action after a month off from team play to compete in the Indiana Spring Invitational this weekend in Bloomington. 

The 16-team event opens Saturday, April 17 with tee times starting at 7:15 a.m. (CT) at The Pfau Course on the University of Indiana campus. All 14 Big Ten teams and top 100 non-conference opponents from Kent State and Xavier will be challenged by the 6,254-yard, par-72 layout. After playing two rounds on Saturday, the teams will return for the final round on Sunday with tee times starting again at 7:15 a.m. (CT). The tournament format in Indiana features six-count-four scoring, which is identical to the format used at the Big Ten Championships (April 23-25).

Kate Smith, a fifth-year senior from Detroit Lakes, Minn., leads Nebraska after just missing the cut at the second annual Augusta National Women's Amateur (March 31-April 3). Smith led the tournament, which featured 82 of the world's top amateurs, after the first day when her round was cut short by weather to just 11 holes. 

Smith's performance in Georgia followed her first career tournament title at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate (March 14-16). Smith finished with a three-round total of 215 (-1) to lead Nebraska to the team title. Smith is hunting for her second career NCAA Regional bid. She is NU's career stroke average leader (73.44) and owns 19 career top-10 finishes, including three this season. 

Kirsten Baete (4th, 221), Michaela Vavrova (T20th, 228), Alice Duan and Lindsey Thiele (T23rd, 229) all finished in the top 25 individually at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.

Smith, Huskers Win in New Orleans
Kate Smith captured her first career tournament title with a three-round total of 215 (-1) to lead Nebraska to the team championship at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Golf & Country Club (March 14-16) in New Orleans.
Smith led from wire-to-wire after an opening-round 71 was followed by a second-round 74 in tough scoring conditions at English Turn. She capped the victory with a final-round 70 (-2).

All five Huskers in the lineup joined Smith in the top-25 at the 13-team event, including Kirsten Baete (4th), Michaela Vavrova (T20th), Alice Duan and Lindsey Thiele (T23rd). Nebraska's season-best round of 288 on the final day helped the Huskers finish with a season-best 884 team total to win the tournament by seven shots.
