WSC hosts first golf tournament since the relaunch, team places fourth
WAYNE, Neb. - Wayne State College women's golf team hosts its first tournament since the program was reinstated.
The Wildcat Classic took place for the first time since 2013.
"I'm hoping we can make this a premier event that more and more teams want to come to," said WSC head coach Joey Baldwin.
The golf programs at WSC were suspended eight years ago due to a lack of funding. Baldwin said the community support has been huge in the program's relaunch.
"Our college is really excited to have the tournament back," Baldwin said. "There were lots of fans out the last two days...Wayne is a very big golf community. We're a town of 5,000 people and I think we have other 300 members here so our town takes a lot of pride in golf and the community showed up today and yesterday and they were really excited."
The community isn't the only one excited about the sport.
"I love it a lot," said Abbey Kurmel WSC Freshman. "It's just a great experience and you just get better and you meet new people and you learn from them too."
Despite the team's youth, it is already chipping away at school records.
"When we started, I was hoping we would shoot in the 320s once this year," said Baldwin. "We've already done it twice. We've broken three school records already."
Baldwin says he hopes to build the program.
"We've got a long way to go," Baldwin said. "We're wanting to be one of the better teams in our conference and hopefully we can get there someday."
The Wildcats are heading to Sioux Falls for their next tournament.
