NE -- Today, the first tornado drill sirens of the season were heard across the state.

But what should you do when a real tornado hits?

  1. First, head to safety: away from windows, and covered with pillows or blankets
  2. Keep a charged cellphone on hand to check for warnings and updates
  3. Keep an emergency kit on hand with flashlights, batteries, bandaids, etc.
  4. Stay away from windows

If you are driving:

  1. Pull over to the side of the road, far away from oncoming cars, trees, or electric pole lines
  2. Duck down
  3. Cover your head
  4. Do NOT park under a tunnel

If you are out in the open:

  1. Find the lowest spot and duck
  2. Protect your head
  3. Call 911 for backup if needed
