Potentially lifesaving information coming to Nebraskans as Severe Weather Awareness Week kicks off.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is working to test communication systems and keep people informed this week.

"We live in Nebraska, we can always count on a tornado or two during this spring and summer," said Jodie Fawl, NEMA Public Information Officer.

NEMA is reminding people to stick with local news organizations and check social media.

"Just know what your local weather service is and follow them on social media," Fawl said.

All week long the officials plan to bring new information. Monday, the focus is on weather terminology, like knowing the difference between a watch and a warning.

It's an opportunity to get informed, but not one to panic. Fawl wants to remind people this week is a chance to learn and participate.

One way they do that is with a poster competition.

"Third-graders across the state have submitted posters to promote severe weather awareness week and all the things that you could do to take action," Fawl said.

The Nebraska native has lived through dozens of severe storms. She says knowing what to do in an emergency helps put you at ease.

"I think being calm and thinking about what you need is very important during any disaster," said Fawl.

A statewide tornado drill will be held on Wednesday. For more information click HERE
