Former Wayne State football player facing sexual assault charge

WAYNE - A former Wayne State football player is in custody and is facing a sexual assault charge.
An affidavit filed on March 1st alleges that 20-year-old Nathan Midkiff of Catawissa, Missouri, and one other male assaulted a female victim in September 2019. The victim states that she was making food in the kitchen area of a residence hall when Midkiff and Alfred Ellington asked her to come to Midkiff's room to smoke marijuana.
The woman says she took four to five "hits" from a "dab pen" and began to feel sick. She sat down on a bean bag chair but Midkiff picked her up and carried her to his bed, where he allegedly had sex with her.
Police say Midkiff admitted to smoking marijuana but denied having sex with the woman. Despite what Midkiff claimed, a DNA sample provided by Midkiff matched samples taken from a sexual assault kit.
According to the Wayne State football website, Midkiff redshirted as a tight end in the 2019 season. Missouri Western listed him as a transfer addition to its 2021 recruiting class, and the affidavit says authorities believed he was attending school at Missouri Western.
The Wayne Police Department says Midkiff was arrested on Friday and is charged with first-degree sexual assault and distributing/possessing a controlled substance.
