Valentino's makes way for new car wash in Norfolk.
The Italian restaurant with 40 years of history in town will be making way for Tommy’s Express, a subscription-based nationwide car wash chain that uses an app for ease of access.
A classic stop on 13th street will be changed forever this month.
A new car wash chain is branching out to Norfolk, and it’s chosen its ideal location.
“We knew we needed a location right here on 13th street, and we’ve been looking for a long time,” said Tommy’s Express co-owner Ben Conover.
“Was fortunate to partner with the Buskohl family that’s had Valentinos for 40 years, and excited to put it right here where Valentinos is."
The Italian restaurant with 40 years of history in town will be shutting down its location in March, making way for Tommy’s Express, a subscription-based nationwide car wash chain that uses an app for ease of access.
With decades of menu expansions and renovations, it’s a place filled with memories. Perhaps most of all for General Manager Jesse Pick.
“I love the crew, and we've had many crews over the years,” he said, “it’s just been a family, fun, it’s a good crew and always has been."
His first delivery job out of high school in 1990 transformed into a career going 30 years strong.
The people were what kept him at Valentino's. With the end of this location’s run in Norfolk, he says what he will miss the most is the building.
“It’s a part of me, almost,” he said, “color schemes, countertops, you know I helped pick all that out. Done a lot of the wall work with a couple other people. Gonna miss the building, I’ve done everything to it."
Before closing its doors for good on 13th Street, the restaurant will be slinging the sauce for one last send-off.
“Come share your memories over the last 40 years of being here,” Pick said, “the last day you can come in here and eat is March 28th, so it will be a big brunch."
It will be a heartfelt occasion for those who grew up with Valentinos and continued to visit.
But to those who are worried about missing some Valentinos brand Old World Pizza, don’t worry.
“They’re not ‘closing,’ they’re ‘moving,’” said Wade Blackman of Jerry’s Sinclair.
And they’re not just moving. They’re moving only about 500 feet.
“We’re going to move it into our old shop that we had at Jerry’s Sinclair,” he said.
Valentino's new location will also come with a new format - no more seating arrangements, opting for a takeout format, and, eventually, a new drive-through portion.
“It’s going to be a big change. Big, but small,” Pick said.
“We’re going to be neighbors, and, hopefully, we get along well!” Blackman said.
Demolition of Valentino’s is tentatively set to begin this summer. TheTire and Oil Change Services are moving from Jerry's Sinclair Gas Station to the Jerry's Service Center on Michigan Avenue.
