Columbus Public Library to hold auction before closing old doors forever
The Columbus Public Library is clearing out, and the old police station it will be moving to is cleaning up.
The library will be closing the doors on its old location forever on Friday. With a ton of stuff needing to be moved or removed, an auction will be held Saturday to lighten the load.
“You have about 2 weeks to get things out, and then demo is going to be starting,” said Auctioneer Rick Grubaugh, “It’s not going to be too long before this building will be gone.”
Books, furniture, lights, and more are getting tagged for sale at the auction. Various and occasionally unexpected pieces will be made available for collectors.
“There’s a kitchen on the second floor that has the old metal shelving,” Grubaugh said. “Somebody that’s into redoing homes or something, that’d be something to be interested in.”
Some of the most significant items are the ones that hold the most story with the town.
Some original print books will be available by local published others from days gone by-
“A businessman that’s been very successful in Columbus, Phil Hockenburger, wrote how Columbus grew,” Grubaugh said.
Grubaugh is happy for the opportunity to disseminate the building’s history before it’s torn finally torn down.
The auction will be the last event the library will hold within its old halls.
“When these buildings are demolished, it goes that way. And it’s sad,” he said.
“Yet, that’s progress of a city. And they need that progress as well. But it’s bittersweet.”
