A 105 year tradition in south central Nebraska makes changes during the pandemic, But the adjustments are inspiring the town.

Minden, also known as the "Christmas City", kicks off its Christmas Tradition Festival the day after thanksgiving.

After a Miss Christmas pageant the historic lights are turned on.

Though the courthouse and streets of the downtown are lit up every year, festival coordinator Kathi Schutz says the traditions aren't just the bright lights.

"This tradition, people actually create family traditions around are light tradition," Schutz said. "Which I think is amazing. I get chills every time I think about it."

Though the town lighting wasn't affected by the pandemic, many other activities were altered.

The carnival was moved outdoors, the "Light of the world " pageant was made into an audio recording instead of a live play, and Santa was set up for social distancing.

Despite the changes, Schutz says the town made the most of it.

"This year has really inspired a lot of people in the community to come up with new ways of celebrating a tradition," said Schutz. "I think that's the way community change and thrive and grow."

The Christmas Festival will continue to let the lights shine until after the new year.
