Nebraska's largest light show: The Magical Lights of Seward
People from all over are visiting southeast Nebraska for the state’s largest light show: The Magical Lights of Seward.
"Our light show is different from what most people think of when you say, 'I'm going to go look at Christmas lights,' because our show is exactly that; it's a show, it's not a display," said owner and creator Vinny Pittinger.
The show uses over 400,000 lights, and takes 20 minutes to drive through.
The Magical Lights of Seward is made for families, by a family.
"99 percent of this work is done by my family, with the bulk of it, my father and I," said Pittinger. "It's been a great experience for him and I to work together so much throughout this last year. It's been wonderful."
Pittinger said they love talking to the show-goers, especially the kids.
"We talk to them," said Pittinger. "We say, 'what was the coolest thing you saw?'. You'll ask ten different kids and get nine different answers on what the coolest thing was. Which is really exciting to us."
Although the Pittingers see a little bit of everyone:
"I like to say the only people that come and see my show are kids," said Pittinger. "Because that might be a 40-year-old kid. It might be a 60-year-old kid. But these Christmas lights bring out the kid and the child in all of us."
Though it only shines during the holidays, the light show is a year long project.
"We'll be building Christmas light displays in July," Pittinger said.
His hobby's mid-summer tests have raised many questions on social media.
"People from our community in Malcolm will typically respond to a community chat and say, 'it's probably the Pittingers doing something stupid,'" said Pittinger.
This is the first year the magical light show is in Seward, and Pittinger said it’s not the last. He hopes to double the show size next year.
It's not too late to see the show. It will run through New Year's Eve.
