LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska football coach Scott Frost shared his thoughts on Wednesday’s Big Ten announcement that Ohio State will be allowed to play in the conference title game, despite the Buckeyes being one game short of the conference’s previously established minimum number of games.

Frost, when asked about the league's decision to erase the six-game minimum for Ohio State during his Thursday press conference, said it has nothing to do with Nebraska but that "it's probably what's best for the conference."

After the Big Ten’s announcement on Wednesday, Ohio State will now be able to compete against Northwestern in the Dec. 19 Big Ten Championship. The Buckeyes’ postseason status became a question mark on Tuesday when Michigan had to cancel its regular season rivalry game against Ohio State due to COVID-19. The cancellation was the third of the season for Ryan Day’s team, leaving the Buckeyes with only five games played.

Regarding the decision, the Big Ten said the undefeated Buckeyes would have advanced to the championship no matter the outcome of the game with Michigan, as a result of holding a win over one-loss Indiana.

Nebraska has faced one cancellation this season, seeing its Oct. 31 game against Wisconsin nixed. The Huskers tried to line up a replacement game against Chattanooga that week, but the Big Ten vetoed Nebraska’s attempts.

At the time, Nebraska officials argued that allowing schools to schedule replacement games could benefit teams toward the end of the season with postseason eligibility and playoff spots on the line. In a joint statement Chancellor Ronnie Green and Athletic Director Bill Moos argued that schools demonstrating a commitment to the safety protocols should have "the flexibility to play non-conference games."

Doing so, they said, could provide "the ability for all Big Ten members to play a non-conference game if needed could provide another data point for possible College Football Playoff and bowl consideration." Prior to any cancellations, Big Ten teams were already scheduled to play fewer games than teams in the SEC, Big 12 and ACC.
