Omaha Democrats have their first major candidate in next year's mayor's race.

News Channel Nebraska first reported in February that Omaha businessman RJ Neary was likely to run.

Today Neary is making it official.

Neary tells NCN Omahans are "hungry for new leadership" and he has the necessary experience to "get things done."

Other Democrats including Douglas County Commissioner Jim Cavanaugh are looking at the race, as Republican incumbent Jean Stothert seeks an unprecedented third term in the city's spring election.

According to Neary's campaign, several current and former elected Democrats are backing Neary.

Those names include former Senator and Governor Bob Kerrey, former 2-term Mayor Mike Fahey, City Councilmen Ben Gray and Vinny Palermo along with former Mayor Jim Suttle who lost to Stothert in 2013.
