LINCOLN - A man is in custody and two law enforcement officials are recovering from injuries after a man rammed a police cruiser at a Lincoln gas station on Thursday.

Lincoln Police say officers were called to the Casey’s General Store at 4141 S 48^th Street on a report of theft just after 5 a.m. Officers arrived and contacted the employee who reported a man had been in the area visiting gas stations asking for money.

The man then took a cup of coffee and left without paying for it.

Officers were familiar with the man as they had responded to other calls in the area of a man acting suspiciously in other gas stations.

Following this report, officers responded to at least 7 other gas stations where employees reported a man was causing disturbances, threatening people, and acting suspiciously.

Just before 8 a.m., police were called the U-stop at 7100 Pioneers Blvd. where the employee said the man was walking behind the counter and threatening employees.

The man then took cigars from behind the counter and continued to cause a disturbance. When an officer arrived, they saw the red Oldsmobile parked at the gas pumps and parked behind it to keep the man from leaving.

The officer saw the man exit the store and begin walking towards the car.

The officers tried to take the man into custody, but, he got into the driver’s seat.

He then began driving the car back and forth pinning the officers in the open door frame while ramming his vehicle into the police cruiser and gas pump.

During that incident, both the Lincoln Police officer and NSP Trooper were injured.

Another trooper arrived just as the suspect vehicle was fleeing the area.

That trooper initiated a pursuit as the vehicle fled westbound on Pioneers before turning northbound on 70^th Street.

As the vehicle reached an area with no traffic between Normal Blvd. and Van Dorn Street, the trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention to end the pursuit.

Officers took the man into custody around 8 a.m.

The man has been identified as 29-year-old Connor Sweeney and was arrested for two counts of Assault on a Police Officer and several other charges related to this incident.

Both the officer and trooper were treated at a local area hospital for their injuries which are not considered life-threatening.
