Slow Start of Thanksgiving Donations for Columbus Rescue Mission
And, consequently, a need for more donations to meet them.
Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, and the Columbus Rescue Mission wants to make sure no family goes without a meal this year.
But at the moment, they need some help.
"At this point, we really don't have anything as far as the baskets go," said Director of Development Doug Phillips. "We hope, as in past years, that stuff starts coming in."
In previous years the rescue mission served up to 300 people with their annual Thanksgiving Basket event. The number to serve has slowly petered off as time went on, but they’re still short of some necessary items.
"We're looking for all of the other fixings like potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, and so forth," he said.
This year’s events have given the rescue mission reason to expect a possible uptick in attendance for this year’s Basket. And, consequently, a need for more donations to meet them.
"With COVID the way that it is and everything else, we just don't' know how it's affected families, how many people are not going to have food for thanksgiving," he said.
The call for donations was put out a week ago. While it’s been slow going so far, Phillips says the rescue mission has always gotten the support it needed from the very community it has been dedicated to serve.
"We count on our donors and the community to keep this place going so we can serve others," he said.
"All of these people put together have done a great job of that."
The Rescue Mission will continue to receive donations up until November 20th.
