With winds gusting over 30 mph on Monday, the Scottsbluff Girls Golf Team opened up a 21-shot lead over Omaha Duchesne Academy heading into day two of the Nebraska State Girls Golf Championships at Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering. The Bearcats fired a 354 team score to the Cardinals 375 with Elkhorn North sitting third 12 strokes back at 387.

Scottsbluff head coach Brock Ehler said his team grinded today. “Looked like they were trying on every shot, and that’s all you can ask for. I think a lot of teams got wore down.”

Elkhorn North freshman Julia Karmazin, who was made the turn at -2 finished with a 5 over 77 to lead the individual standings. Bearcat sophomore Anna Kelly is sitting in second after shooting an 81. Gering senior, Madilyne Schlaepfer, is one shot back at 82.

All five Scottsbluff golfers are in the top 13 heading into Tuesday’s second round. Emily Krzyzanowski is in a 3-way tie for 6th with an 89. Freshman Nielli Heinold and senior Halle Shaddick both shot 92 and are in a 3-way tie for 10th. Senior Haley Holzworth sits in 13th with 93.

Day two of the Girls State Golf Championships will begin on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. with the leaders teeing off at 10:40 a.m. The weather conditions should be much improved with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, and winds out of the SSW at 9 mph.
