SIDNEY - Live music is back in Sidney this weekend.

Swinging jazz trio, The Lightning Bugs, return to the Nebraska panhandle for a performance at the Sidney High School Performing Arts Center on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Lightning Bugs are a trio from Lincoln, Neb. that formed in 1985 when drummer Reynold Peterson recruited guitarist Steve Hanson and bassist Jim Pipher to play at a local singer-songwriter's house.

Pipher said they never planned to play beyond that concert, but they've traveled to communities throughout the Midwest ever since.

Pipher says there may not be dancing this weekend, because of social distancing, but they plan to have people "tapping their toes and clapping along" with features from the 1930s, '40s and '50s.

"We'll try to tip our hats to a lot of the great old big band era masters", Pipher said. "We'll do lots of Lightning Bugs songs. Tunes like 'Glow Worm', which was a 1952 gold record for the Mills Brothers, and kind of the source of the band name. We don't have glow worms in eastern Nebraska, but we do have lightning bugs."

Ink Spots and Nat King Cole Trip are also played regularly by the trio.

Tickets are available at the door and cost $13 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for students.

Organizers at the High Plains Arts Council recommend wearing a face mask to the performance "for the health and safety of their members and performers."
