FAIRBURY, NE — A man accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend will spend more than a year in prison.

39-year-old Aaron Shemat was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison and 18 months of post release supervision in Jefferson County District Court Thursday.  He was given credit for 343 days already served.

Shemat pleaded no contest to terroristic threats and domestic assault charges on April 17. In exchange, the State dismissed two other cases that were pending against him.

Authorities say in court documents that Shemat assaulted his ex-girlfriend at their home in Fairbury in April 2019. The documents say Shemat threatened to kill the victim and himself if she didn’t drive them to Kearney.  The victim told police she got Shemat out of the car while stopping for gas in Hebron.  She said she then drove to the Sheriff’s Office to report the incident.
