SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - The Gering Volunteer Fire Department was recently awarded the 2020 Nebraska State Forester Award by Nebraska State Forester John Erixson.

Staff says recognition is not their strong suit.

They are a group of individuals that provide a professional service just as any other profession.

Through dedicated commitment and strong leadership through the past 50 years, the members of the department have reached out and found innovative ways to promote fire safety, training and agency support.

Staff has supported the Nebraska State Wildfire Academy, responded to many large wildfires in Nebraska's history, and host the West Nebraska Engine Academy.

Additionally, staff has worked with the Nebraska Forest Service to become a Cooperating Agency to the state and Federal agencies.

Staff is humbled, and honestly speechless.

Staff recognize every individual that has came before us that allows us to accept this award on their behalf.

Their current firefighters represent years of dedication from the past.

Their firefighters actively seek training and experience so when we are called upon we can provide the best service we can.
