At Skyview Park in Norfolk, the stage is being set for this year’s July 4th Boom Fest show.

But will the show actually go on this year? Don Wisnieski, the President of Big Bang Boom, is preparing for the best while anticipating the worst.

“We’re going forward with it," Wisnieski said. "We’ve had visits with the city and the appropriate officials and such. And we all have our fingers crossed, let’s hope maybe things are loosened up enough where this community event can happen.

"And it might be a big event because it might be the first community event that we get to do in the area."

The Boom Fest Committee is keeping a close ear to how and when directed health measures will change in the coming months. The word of state officials will determine the fate of this year’s event.

“We’ve touted this as the single largest day event in Northeast Nebraska, and our fireworks show is probably the largest in the Midwest," Wisnieski said.

“It really is a spectacular world-class fireworks show, so it’s big for our community, it’s a huge economic impact for the city of Norfolk and the surrounding area.”

Wisnieski hopes this year’s show will be able to arrive on time not just to keep with show’s storied tradition in Norfolk, but so he can make this year’s event the longest yet-

“This has been about a fifteen-year dream of our committee to make this a multi-day event. So this year is the first time. It’s our 45th year, but it’s going to be a multi-day event. We’re going to have events going on Friday night, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning. So a big momentum for Boom Fest to go to a multi-day event, so we’re looking forward to that.”

Wisnieski and the show’s committee are fully aware of the possibility that Boom Fest may not be able to be held this July, but he is determined to put some lights in the sky at least some time in 2020.

“We won’t cancel it, we will simply postpone it," Wisnieski said."

"The idea is possibly going to a later date, one option, of course, is Labor Day, we like to do it around the holiday which gives everybody an extra day for travel and such."

Volunteers helped Don build the fireworks platform, and local concrete companies donated the necessary materials. The Boom Fest Committee and its fans are keeping their fingers tightly crossed.
