Schuyler schools see larger turnout at mobile food pantry

SCHUYLER - Winter weather may be lingering, but that didn't stop Schuyler Community Schools from holding their mobile food pantry Thursday.
Staff stood in the snow and wind, handing out canned soup, pasta, peanut butter and fresh produce outside Schuyler Elementary.
The school district said it holds the food giveaway every month, but that the turnout today Thursday was higher than normal. They said they served around 200 families, but had to turn away at least 50 vehicles when they ran out of food.
“It’s my understanding that families in Schuyler struggle with food on a normal month," school counselor Meridith Riha said. "So now with the whole concerns about the coronavirus, I think a lot of our families are struggling even more than they were before and more families that have never struggled before also need help. So I think the need is very, very large at this time.”
Riha said the mobile food pantry is made possible by the Food Bank of the Heartland in Omaha.
