Health department encouraging people to contact WIC offices

GRAND ISLAND - With the current economic situation, the Central District Health Department said it's encouraging folks to look into WIC.
It's the federal food and nutrition program for pregnant women and parents with kids up to age 5.
The health department said it wants folks to contact them to see if they are financially eligible to receive benefits.
They said they've recently been getting a lot of phone calls from people who've had drastic income changes and are looking for help. Despite that, they say no one should fear being turned away if they qualify.
“If they call us and if they fit within those income guidelines and the guidelines within the categories of the program, we will be able to provide benefits for them,” community health supervisor Lisa Boeke said.
