YPSILANTI, MI - Another auto maker is using one of its factories to make ventilators.

Ford is hoping to manufacture 50,000 ventilators in 100 days at a Michigan plant.

The auto maker will produce a type of ventilator that only uses air pressure and requires no electricity.

Florida company Airon currently manufactures the ventilator and licenses it to GE Healthcare, but Airon only makes three units per day.

500 union auto workers have volunteered to staff Ford's Rawsonville plant in Ypsilanti to crank out the units around the clock on three different shifts.

The announcement comes after President Donald Trump invoked the defense production act last week to compel General Motors to make ventilators.

Tesla, Dyson, and Virgin Orbit are also working to manufacture the life-saving devices.

Ford says after it makes it's batch of 50,000 ventilators, it will continue to produce them at a rate of 30,000 per month.
