SIDNEY, NE -
It may have been raining Monday morning in Sidney, but that wasn’t going to stop the teachers and students of Sidney Public Schools from seeing each other.
"We just miss them like crazy," South Elementary Principal Rick Meyer said.
Several SPS teachers spent over two hours weaving their way through town to say high to their students.
"Being able to see the kids again, it was so amazing," Meyer said. "Seeing the giant train of cars we had was so satisfying. It really was."
And plenty of students came out to see them.
"Going down streets and seeing big groups of them and neighborhood kids kind of clumped together a little bit and cheering on the teachers, it was just a neat, neat experience," Meyer said.
Sidney South Elementary Principal Rick Meyer says one of his teachers, 2nd grade teacher Shannon Wilde, approached him with the idea after seeing social media posts of other communities doing something similar.
The rest of the staff quickly jumped on board.
"Any chance that we can do to get out there and kind of be able to wave to them and say hi is something we're all going to take advantage of."
And with Meyer leading the way on Monday, many teachers got to say hi to their students in person for the first time in almost a month.
"It's probably the best drive around this town I've ever had," Meyer said. "It was an awesome thing seeing all the kids and all the parents out there."
